Getting Started; Overcoming Gym Fear
Getting Started; Overcoming Gym Fear
Jaime CPT, CES, CNC
Today's goal is to provide inspiration to start, resume, or affirm your ongoing health and fitness endeavors. This read is geared towards those who want to begin strength training, but are intimidated by various factors, not excuses but by genuine concerns. We'll cover the psychological and logistical hurdles, offering solutions to help get the ball rolling.
Fear of Judgement
I'll start with the beginner phase and the fear of being judged. The large gym crowds or worrying about looking like a total beginner can be scary, especially if you're introverted. Here's the truth, we all begin somewhere! Starting from scratch may be scary, but that can be the fun part, everything's new. In my experience, being a beginner has been intimidating because I don't know what I'm doing and can appear clueless. Utilizing friends, mentors, or coaches is what has allowed a scary process to be more comfortable and have a quicker learning curve. The fear of judgement is real, many of us have felt it. What's also real is that those who want us to succeed will support us, regardless of where we're at. The ones who judge and critique with no intention of helping are battling with their own personal insecurities. Wanting to start is the initial momentum that's needed, keep it going and embrace the beginner phase! Learn from those who are more experienced and share with newcomers as you progress.
Deciding How/What to Train
The next hurdle is not knowing what to do. Deciding what to do depends on your goals! Common goals can be related to general health, aesthetics, or sports to name a few. Online resources make it convenient to discover exercises and offer motivation. However, be mindful that social media and online searches can be a double-edged sword. It can be oversaturated with information or inconsequently promote comparison. Qualified and experienced trainers offering solid advice can be found, but be aware of influencers who purely post for entertainment. If you are still unsure about how to approach your training, invest in a qualified personal trainer. Do some research for local trainers who suite your needs, schedule a consult, and see if you two are a right fit. Training 1-on-1 doesn't have to be a forever-thing, I personally guarantee that a minimum of 3 months of consistent training will offer positive results and develop the skills to feel confident when training independently. Lastly, training goals may evolve as you progress, develop different interests, or enter new chapters in life. Start simple or consider hiring a trainer.
Where to Train
Today's final hurdle that I'll discuss is the access to equipment or a training facility. The absolute most convenient place is your home. Bodyweight exercises using TRX suspension straps can be a great starting point. However, the convenience won't always outweigh the motivation. Additionally, there may come a moment when you need to progress and consider other options. A local gym that suites your desires is the next option. A place close to home, maybe that your friends go to, but most importantly that you enjoy. This gym might become your "3rd space", the ultimate place where you are happy to meet new people and excited to workout with a friend. Once this hurdle is overcome, build the consistency and pursue after your goals!
Conclusion
The beginner phase can be the most challenging part, and I'm here to help when you need it. I hope these solutions were inspiring, or at least entertaining. My biggest takeaway is that if you are afraid of being judged, remember that haters have their own problems to worry about and genuine strangers will be supportive. Consider a trainer if you want excellent coaching, master techniques, and want to learn how to plan your workouts.
